Heated Towel Rail: Electric or Central Heating? (And When Dual Fuel Wins)

In short: a central heating towel rail is plumbed into the heating circuit: the heat is cheap, but you only get it when the boiler is on. An electric one is independent and comes on whenever you want — including in July — but the heat it produces costs roughly twice as much per kWh. A dual fuel model does both, and it is the right answer if you need warmth in the bathroom out of season. If you are renovating and the pipework is there, start from central heating (or dual fuel); if it is not there and you do not want to lift tiles, go electric. The question always arrives at the same moment: you have decided to replace the old radiator in the bathroom, you already have the model in mind, and then you realise the exact same object comes in three versions. It looks like a detail, but it is the choice that decides whether, on a September morning with the heating still off, your towel is warm or not. In this guide we compare a heated towel rail, electric or central heating, on the five points that actually matter: how they are fitted, what they cost to run, what happens in summer, how much maintenance they need and when a dual fuel model makes sense. No rankings: at the end there are the typical situations with a straight answer. Every model — ladder style, vertical, designer, in all three versions — is in the towel rails and bathroom radiators collection. How they work: same object, three technologies Central heating: water from the system An ordinary heat emitter plumbed into the heating circuit, with connections top and bottom, a control valve and a lockshield. Hot water from the boiler (or heat pump) flows through it. It uses no electricity, it has a bleed valve because air can get into the circuit, and its output depends on the flow temperature of the system. Electric: sealed circuit and a heating element It is connected to no pipework at all. Inside there is a factory-charged quantity of thermal fluid in a sealed, closed circuit, heated by an electric element screwed in at the bottom, usually on the left. The practical consequence: it is never bled, never topped up and never opened. Typical outputs run from around 300 to 900 W depending on size. Dual fuel: both A central heating towel rail with an electric element added, fitted in place of the lower blanking plug. In winter it works off the heating system; in summer and the shoulder seasons it is isolated from the circuit and runs on the element alone. It needs both the plumbing connections and an electrical supply: it is the most complete version and also the one that asks the most at installation. The ratio between the two technologies, though, stays stable. A 500 W electric towel rail on for two hours a day uses 1 kWh: at €0.25/kWh that is about 25 cents a day, so somewhere around €7-8 a month. Not a frightening figure, and it is exactly why electric works so well as a secondary source of heat, switched on half an hour before the shower. It becomes a different story if you use it as the bathroom's main heating for a whole season: four hours a day for four months, with the same appliance, takes the bill towards €60 a season for that one room. The same heat produced by a gas system costs roughly half, because a kWh of heat from a boiler is currently worth about half a kWh of electricity. Translated into a rule of thumb: electric is cheap if you use it sparingly. If the bathroom needs real heat every day in winter, central heating (or dual fuel) wins on running cost, and the difference pays for itself within a few seasons. Summer and the shoulder seasons: this is where it is decided This is the point that changes most people's minds, and also the one least considered at the point of purchase. A central heating towel rail is tied to the system: when the boiler is off — April to October, and on those cold September days when the heating is not on yet — it is a towel holder and nothing more. If what you need is dry towels all year round, keeping damp under control in a bathroom with no window, or a touch of warmth after a shower in May, then the independence of an electric model is not a detail: it is the whole reason for the choice. If, on the other hand, the bathroom is well ventilated and towels dry by themselves in two hours in summer, the advantage shrinks considerably. Installation: what actually changes (and the part not to improvise) On the central heating side: if you are replacing an old radiator, the connections are already there, and the job comes down to checking the pipe centres (the distance between the two connections) and the height. If instead the towel rail is going somewhere new on the wall, you need chasing, pipework and making good: that is a plumber's job and it belongs in the budget, often costing more than the emitter itself. On the electric side installation is simpler but not trivial, because we are in a bathroom. In summary, what you should know and insist on: Bathrooms are divided into zones (in and around the bath and shower) and in those zones appliances must have a minimum IPX4 rating: the towel rail's data sheet always states it. In the zones around bath and shower socket outlets are not allowed: the connection must be a fixed one, or the supply point must sit outside the zones. The circuit supplying the bathroom must be protected by a 30 mA RCD. The connection is made by a qualified electrician, who certifies the work. This is not paperwork: it is water and electricity in the same room. Zones, IP ratings and RCD requirements follow IEC 60364-7-701 and the wiring regulations in force in your country: check the local rules before you order. NEVER DO THIS: power an electric towel rail from an extension lead or a plug strip, and open the body of an electric model to «bleed» or top it up. It is a sealed circuit: if it loses fluid, the element runs dry on the next switch-on and burns out. Dual fuel: when it genuinely makes sense Dual fuel solves the limitation of a central heating model without giving up its running cost, and it is the most sensible choice in three cases: A renovation where the pipework is planned anyway. If you are doing the plumbing regardless, adding the element is a marginal cost and buys you summer use. A bathroom used outside the heating system's hours: anyone showering early in the morning or late at night in a house with timed heating. Second homes and occasionally used flats, where firing the whole system for one room makes no sense. Two technical warnings. First: to work in summer a dual fuel towel rail must be isolated from the circuit, so it needs the right valves (usually a kit with a diverter valve or two isolating valves) and the element must be able to work on a closed volume. Second: the element does not reproduce the full output of the central heating side — it is generally sized at around half — so in summer it warms the towels and takes the chill off the room, it does not heat it the way it does in January. Worth knowing: an existing central heating towel rail can in many cases be converted to dual fuel without replacing it, provided there is a suitable blanking plug connection and an electrical supply can be added. Output: do not confuse «warms towels» with «heats the bathroom» This is the most widespread mistake and it applies to all three versions. A slim, good-looking towel rail can have a modest output: fine for keeping two towels warm, not enough to bring an 8 m² bathroom with an external wall up to 22-24 °C. If the towel rail is the only heat emitter in the room, the output needs checking before you choose the model, not after. Two things to keep in mind when reading data sheets: the output of central heating models is declared to EN 442 at Δt 50 K, that is, with water much hotter than a low-temperature system provides — with a heat pump the real output is far below the plate figure. On electric models, by contrast, the stated wattage is the power actually drawn by the element, so a direct comparison between the two numbers is never like for like. Which one to choose if… You are just replacing the old bathroom radiator and the connections are there → central heating. It is the cheapest route, both to buy and to run. Consider dual fuel if you miss the warmth out of season. There are no plumbing connections and you do not want to break the tiles → electric. Models with a thermostat and programming are among the electric towel rails. An internal or damp bathroom with permanently wet towels → electric or dual fuel: here summer independence is worth more than the cost of a kWh. You are refitting the bathroom from scratch → dual fuel. That is the moment when the price difference is minimal and the benefit lasts twenty years. The towel rail is the only heating in the room and the house has a boiler → central heating, correctly sized, with an element added if you want it. A house with a low-temperature heat pump → careful: a model sized at Δt 50 will put out far less than expected. In these systems dual fuel (or a dedicated electric rail) is often the more realistic solution for the bathroom. FAQ: common questions Can an electric towel rail be converted to central heating, or the other way round?No. An electric one is a sealed body with no connections, it cannot be plumbed in. A central heating one, on the other hand, can almost always become dual fuel: the lower blanking plug is replaced with a compatible element and valves are added to isolate it from the circuit. Do you bleed an electric towel rail?No, never. It is a closed circuit filled at the factory. If only the lower part gets warm that may be perfectly normal (the top tube is deliberately left empty for the fluid to expand); if half of it stays cold even after an hour, the problem is the thermostat or the element. Can an electric towel rail be plugged into a normal socket?Only if the model is supplied with a plug and the socket is outside the bath and shower zones, on a circuit protected by a 30 mA RCD. When in doubt, a fixed connection made by an electrician is the correct answer. Extension leads and plug strips in a bathroom are always ruled out. Do heated towel rails use a lot of electricity?It depends almost entirely on how long you leave them on. A 500 W model used two hours a day costs around €7-8 a month with energy at €0.25/kWh; four hours a day, double that. A timer and a thermostat are what separate the two scenarios. Does dual fuel work in summer even with the system drained?It must be isolated from the circuit with the appropriate valves, so the water stays in the emitter and the element works on a closed volume. If the system is fully drained, the element must not be switched on: it would run dry. What is the difference between a heated towel rail and a bathroom radiator?In everyday use, none: they are the same object. «Towel rail» emphasises the function (the horizontal tubes you hang towels on), «bathroom radiator» the role in the room. Manufacturers use the terms interchangeably, and vertical designer models appear under both. In conclusion The choice comes down to two questions. First: are the plumbing connections there? If they are, central heating remains the cheapest option to run. If they are not, electric saves you building work that often costs more than the emitter. Second: do you need heat when the heating is off? If the answer is yes, it is electric or dual fuel, because no pure central heating model will ever give you that comfort.
