How to bleed a heated towel rail: the 4 steps
Bleeding a towel rail is a simple job you can do yourself in a few minutes, provided you go about it carefully and cast an eye over the system pressure when you have finished. All you need is the right bleed key — a 5 mm square key on most modern towel rails, a flat-blade screwdriver on some models, an Allen key on others — a tray and a cloth. Here are the four steps in detail.
Put a tray under the towel rail
The first step is always the same: switch the heating off and let it cool down, ideally an hour beforehand. While the pump is running it keeps pushing hot water round the circuit, and the air never gets the chance to rise. Then get your kit together: a shallow tray under the towel rail (not a bucket — one rarely fits under a towel rail valve), a cloth and the right bleed key. Once that is in place, you can start.
Open the bleed valve
Fit the key into the bleed valve socket. On a towel rail it is always at the top, on the side opposite the thermostatic valve. Turn slowly anticlockwise, half a turn at most: you will hear the air hissing out. Leave it open until a thin trickle of water replaces the air — that is the sign the emitter is full. Then close it straight away.
Close the valve and check the pressure
Now close the valve again by turning the key clockwise — without overtightening, the washer will not thank you. Before firing the heating back up, take a look at the system pressure on the boiler gauge. If it is too low, top up from the filling loop until you reach the correct value, then close all the taps carefully (making sure they are not dripping).
MIND THE PRESSURE: read the correct value on the gauge with the system cold; it normally sits between 1 and 1.5 bar (1.2 bar is the most common reference, and taller buildings need more). If bleeding has taken it below 1 bar, open the filling loop slowly and close it firmly the moment you reach the right value: leaving it open is the most common mistake, the system goes over-pressure and the safety valve discharges. Switch the heating back on
Now switch the heating back on and open the thermostatic valve fully. Half an hour later, run your hand up the towel rail from bottom to top: if it is evenly warm across the whole surface, there is no air left and you are done. If a cold patch remains at the top, repeat the process — it is rare for everything to come out first time.
An electric towel rail is never bled: what to do if it will not heat up
Before you go looking for the bleed valve, check how your towel rail is supplied. If it has no pipes running to the heating system but an electric cable (or an element screwed in at the bottom, usually on the left), it is an electric model: inside there is a factory-charged quantity of thermal fluid in a sealed, closed circuit. There is no air to remove, nothing to top up, and it must never be opened for any reason: undoing a plug means losing fluid and, on the next switch-on, burning out an element that would be running dry.
If an electric towel rail is not heating, or heating poorly, the usual causes are different ones:
- It only warms up in the lower half — and that is normal. Many models are filled with the top tube deliberately left empty, to give the fluid room to expand: in normal running the upper part stays a little cooler. It is only worth worrying if the difference is stark and the top half is still cold after an hour.
- Thermostat or programming. On models with a controller, check the set temperature, the weekly timer and any expired «boost» function. This is by far the most common cause.

How often should you bleed a bathroom towel rail?
Once a year, at the end of summer or the start of autumn, before the first firing: that is when air has gathered at the high points of the system after months of standing still, and it is also when you have all the time you need to spot a serious problem without sitting in the cold.
Outside that annual date, bleed as soon as one of these signs appears:
- the towel rail is warm at the bottom and cold at the top (the classic case of trapped air);
- you hear gurgling or running water when the system fires up;
- work has just been done on the system (an emitter replaced, a drain-down, a top-up): in that case air has definitely got in.
WHEN IT IS NOT AIR: if the towel rail is cold at the bottom and lukewarm at the top, it is not air: it is sludge settled at the base. Bleeding will not help; the system needs a power flush by a qualified engineer.
